How To Build Cordless Roman Shades

Building your own cordless roman shades is a great way to save yourself a lot of money. As long as you have the experienced required to finish the job properly, this will also give you the satisfaction of knowing that you completed the work yourself. To get started on the right track, follow the basic steps that we have outlined for you below. These will give you a great starting point, and with your own unique design style, you will have some of the best cordless roman shades ever built.

Step #1) Measure Your Window’s Width – Before you are able to begin working on the shades themselves, you are going to need to determine how wide the shades are going to be. This greatly depends on whether you are going to mount the shades inside of the window frame, or on the exterior of the window frame. Figure out how you will mount them, and then take a measurement of the width and write it down.

Step #2) Measure Your Window’s Height – (Add 6”) Now you will need to measure your windows height. You will want to make sure that you add 6” total to the height of the window to give some overlap on the finished product, and keep the blinds from being created too short.

Step #3) Lay Your Fabric – Lay your fabric out so you can begin working on it. You will want to hem the sides with a ¼ hem seam. Pin the loop side of the fabric, and sew in hook and loop tape to the top edge of the material. Stich the pieces of tape in place.

Step #4) Draw Your Measurements – Now you will need to create marks around every 8 inches of the material, starting from the bottom of it and working your way up. Hand sew curtain rings at each mark that you have created.

Step #5) Hang The Shades – To do this you will want to join the loop tape that you have sewn on to the shade to the batten’s hook tape that you put in place.

Step #6) Attach Your Closing Hooks – To start you will want to place one closing hook on the bottom ring of each row. Lift the hook so that it catches onto the next ring, and continue until the shade is the height that you desire.
